Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of an integrated smoking cessation program for patients with schizophrenia.

Methods: This study was designed as a nonequivalent control group repeated measures quasi- experimental study. The subjects were 47 patients with schizophrenia, 19 in the experimental group and 28 in the control group. The integrated smoking cessation program was given to the experimental group once a week for 10 weeks. Data was collected before treatment, midterm, immediately after (posttest 1) and 3 months after (posttest 2) the treatment. Data was analyzed by x2 test, Fisher¡¯s exact test, independent t-test, and repeated measures ANCOVA.

Results: After the treatment (posttest 1), between the experimental and control group, there was a significant difference in urine cotinine level. Midterm and after the treatment (posttest 1), between the experimental and control group, there were significant differences in stages of change of smoking behavior.

Conclusion: The integrated smoking cessation program has limited effects on smoking behavior, cognition and behavior for quitting smoking. The results of this study suggest that further research needs to revise the integrated smoking cessation program for patients with schizophrenia.
